Abraham Lincoln:
Lets Meet Abe !
Abraham Lincoln was born to illiterate parents, yet he was hungry for knowledge. He educated himself and after working as rail-splitter, storekeeper, and surveyor, he taught himself law. This led to a career in politics- and eventually to the White House. By living in America, Abraham Lincoln was free to achieve whatever he wanted. Small wonder that he fought to preserve the nation he described as "the last best hope of earth."
The Election of 1860
The election of 1860 is one of the most historic elections of our history. It has helped shape our nation to what it is today: A Free Nation. The four candidates were Abraham Lincoln, who represented the Republican Party, J.C. Breckinridge, who represented the Southern Democratic Party, John Bell, who represented the Constitutional Union, and Stephen Douglas, who represented the Northern Democratic Party. Abraham Lincoln won both the popular vote and the electoral vote. Abraham Lincoln had 180 electoral votes and Stephen Douglas had 12, while Douglas had only 500,000 less of the popular vote. J.C. Breckinridge had 72 electoral votes with a million less popular votes than Lincoln. "Lincoln's victory convinced Southerners that they had lost their political voice in the national government". (Littel 2003) This led to the southern secession from the Union. Below is a breakdown of which candidate won each state.
