The main reason that States Rights was such an important cause of the war was because the Southern States no longer felt that they (as individuals) were being respected and allowed to act independently. States in the South felt very strongly about their right to regulate their own individual laws concerning slavery, because it was part of their livelihood and their right. However, Federal Rights won here as once an amendment is written to the constitution, all the other states must comply.

Today, there is still quite a debate on whether decisions on laws should be made by a state-by-state basis or be the same for all states. Some examples today of laws that vary by state are speed limits, immigration policies, and the minimum age you can get your drivers' license. The range of ages for beginning to get your license, varies significantly from state to state. For example, in Alaska, you can get your Drivers' permit at age 14, while in NY, you cannot get your permit until you turn 16.

Questions:

1. Why do you think that slavery was an issue that shouldn't have been left for "States' Rights"?

2. As an American, do you think that all laws should be the same for each state? And do you think that states should be allowed to propose and enact laws that are in opposition to Federal Laws?

3. Using one of the examples mentioned above: State Speed Limits, Immigration policies, or Drivers' Permit/Full-License Age minimums, select one of those laws that differ between states, and explain why or why not you agree that the area should be controlled by the state, rather than be the same for the entire country.
